More than a dozen residents, and a number of lucky staff, were captivated throughout the 45-minute performance, which saw a spectacular string ensemble perform an intimate concert of exhilarating and joyful music.

When it comes to reminiscing about her long life, the matriarch is never short of tales to tell given she has lived in many different countries during her nine decades and has learned to speak numerous languages, including Japanese, Chinese, Malay and Hindi.

Ivy Lim and Mary Rogers will be two of a handful of staff members of Mercy Place Mont Clare who will work on Christmas day, 25 December, including nurses, carers, cooks and kitchen helpers, all of whom will be focused on ensuring that residents enjoy a traditional Christmas lunch as well as tending to their daily care needs.

One new resident at the popular Claremont aged care home, Mercy Place Mont Clare, is 75-year-old Charmaine Brown, who started life in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia back in 1947, after her father – a tropical disease pathologist working for the World Health Organisation – was transferred from British Borneo after World War II.

Hamersley resident Alan Williams and Kingsley local George Wakelin visit Mercy Place Edgewater every Thursday where they socialise with residents, accompany them on walks in the garden and help with various activities, including morning exercises.

A born and bred West Australian, Ivy Ballentine entered the world on 16 March 1919, joining the army during World War II and marrying future husband George in her 20’s. She celebrated her 103rd birthday this week.

Mercy Place resident Enid Macoboy celebrated her 100th birthday on 2 March, with an afternoon tea with family and close friends at a grand daughter’s home, followed by a morning tea with Mercy Place staff. She was truly delighted with birthday wishes from the Queen, Prime Minister and others but, as suspected, her biggest smile was saved for the Papal Blessing from Pope Francis. By The Record.

International Day of Older Persons, on Friday 1 October, was a special time for residents at Mercy Place Mont Clare to celebrate the contributions their fellow residents, such as WWII naval veteran and former university lecturer Dr Basil Balme, have made to their communities.
