Speech by Bishop Don Sproxton on the Feast of St Mary MacKillop 30th Anniversary of LifeLink and 25th Anniversary of LifeLink Day

Chisholm College have last week expressed their pride in the gift of a new Crozier for Auxiliary Bishop Don Sproxton, the result of considerable planning, problem-solving, craftsmanship, fine joinery, attention to detail and good old-fashioned elbow grease.

Not only does this move reflect best practices in record-keeping, but it also demonstrates the Archdiocese’s commitment to embracing the recommendations of the Royal Commission.

To mark the 30th anniversary of LifeLink and 25th anniversary of the Archbishop’s LifeLink Day Initiative, a light show featuring large colourful images was displayed on the exterior of the front of St Mary’s Cathedral.

The visit to the parish gave Bishop Don the opportunity to meet with Parish Priest Fr Jeronimo Flamenco Castillo and the parish leadership team, ministry coordinators and parishioners, as well as St Peters Primary School Leadership Group, teachers and students.

The world around us is rapidly changing, particularly in the field of communication. If undertaken effectively, it ultimately never stops. For us as a Catholic Church – the Archdiocese of Perth – it is at the core of what we do – the announcement of the Gospel!

In his homily for the annual Mass for Volunteers, Auxiliary Bishop Don Sproxton expressed deep gratitude for the volunteers’ dedication and service. He began by sharing a personal anecdote from his high school science class, where the simple act of observing a candle flame revealed profound truths about observation and reflection.

Embleton Parish Priest Fr Patrick Toohey has reflected on the dual milestones being commemorated: “Last December we celebrated 50 years since we built the parish church; on May 19, we celebrated 60 years since our founding as a parish.”

In a memorable speech for the inaugural St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, former Federal politician Ken Wyatt spoke of his own personal challenges of growing up in an indigenous family, encouraging those present to heed the timeless wisdom of Australia’s first saint.
