“He gazes on each one of us tonight – he looks deeply into our eyes and searches our hearts – and with love and hope he says to each of us, ‘Come, follow me, walk in my footsteps, do not be afraid, for I have called you by your name – you are mine.’” This was the message of Perth Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB to the people of the Archdiocese of Perth across the first major liturgies of Holy Week 2025.
Speaking at Palm Sunday, 24 March, Perth Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB said that God’s ultimate act of love was manifested in the gift of Jesus Christ, who willingly sacrificed His life for humanity.
On a sunny and windy day, about 60,000 people attended the Mass on 24 March, which began with a solemn procession of hundreds of people carrying green palm branches followed by about 60 cardinals and bishops, carrying “palmurelli,” pale green palm branches that were woven and braided.
As the Perth Palm Sunday 2023 theme and promotional flyer highlighted, guests gathered to ‘Walk for Peace… against the horrors of war and persecution that forces people to flee their homes’.
“We Catholics believe, that is, we know with the certainty of our faith, that in Jesus we have so much more than a really good man who lived a wonderful life and left us a remarkable legacy and a powerful teaching,” said Perth Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB, speaking on Palm Sunday, 2 April.
Archbishop Costelloe marked the beginning of Holy Week with two important celebrations, inviting the congregation to commit to an active search for communion with Christ.
The Palm Sunday Mass was livestreamed to YouTube and Facebook supported by captions and AUSLAN interpretation, with more than 500 viewers tuning in.
