The Record has been awarded bronze in two categories at the recent Australasian Religious Press Associations awards.

The Bronze awards were selected for The Record Magazine in the category of Best Front Cover for the September 2018 issue and Best News story for journalist Matthew Lau’s article on LifeLink Day 2018 in The eRecord.

The ARPA 2019 Conference and Awards were held on 6 and 7 September in Christchurch, New Zealand and attended by Communications Manager and The Record Editor Jamie O’Brien.

The Good Oil tops Catholic press awards

The Good Oil, the e-newsletter published by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, received the Bishop Kennedy Award for Overall Excellence in a Catholic Publication at the Australasian Catholic Press Association Annual Awards Dinner

Catholic media and communications professionals gathered in Bathurst this week for the association’s annual conference, culminating in Mass at the Cathedral with Bishop Michael McKenna, and the awards dinner last night.

The awards, which are held annually, recognise excellence in Catholic magazines, newspapers and digital publications across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.

The Good Oil won the major prize, the Bishop Kennedy Award, as well as Best Electronic Publication. The NZ-based Marist Messenger was awarded Best Print Magazine, while Adelaide’s The Southern Cross won Best Newspaper.

The citation for The Good Oil read:

The Good Oil stood out not only among other on-line publication entries but also the print winners – as deserving as they were.

‘This publication is true to its mission of aiming  to “nourish the spirit, stimulate thinking and encourage reflection and dialogue about contemporary issues from a Good Samaritan perspective”. It is a powerful voice for a forward-looking vision for the Church.

‘Not beholden to hierarchical constraints, it is forthright in its opinions and in the van of social justice campaigning. The site is well-designed, easy to navigate with a good array of news, features, opinion and reflection.’
