Embracing the wild outdoors of Nanga Bush Camp in Dwellingup, 106 youth embarked on the annual Salesian camp, held from 10 to 14 January 2022.

Established in 1989, the WA Young Salesians have been operating in Perth for 33 years following the teachings of Don Bosco.

They are a non-profit organisation providing camps for Christian youth between the ages of 12 to 15.

Participants attended Mass on Monday led by Father Hyginus Ebede who in his homily, spoke about being the heart and hands of Christ, alive in the world ‘today through us.’

This message was continued in the Thursday liturgy focused on the infinite love that Jesus has for us and that when challenges or tough times come our way, God is always there for us – He loves us and will help us through provided that we have faith.

Salesian Camp Coordinator Graham Maher said that the camp was a success with attendance reaching 106 participants and a leadership team of over 40 people across two camp sites.

The environment of this faith-based camp for young teenagers, Mr Maher added, “creates a safe space for our campers and provide an escape from the demands and challenges that they may face in their lives.”

The annual Salesian camp costs around $56 per day, was attended by 106 participants between the ages of 12 to 15 at Nanga Bush Camp in Dwellingup from 10 to 14 January. Photo: Supplied.

“Everyone is at different stages in their faith life and sometimes fighting battles/challenges that others may not even know about. The two Masses and subtle evangelisation throughout the week through our Salesian Good Nights (started by St Don Bosco himself) reminds our campers that they are not alone and part of a larger family – the Salesian family,” Mr Maher said.

“Our camps have been running for 33 years and many of our campers have been attending for many years and look forward to attending each year and catching up with friends made on previous camps. It is always interesting and exciting to hear that parent who attended these camps when they were a kid and are now sending their own children.”

Mr Maher added that the ongoing activities planned, keeps the campers engaged and allows them to be in mother nature, enjoying the surrounds of Nanga, unplugged from their phones and technological devices.
