The St Vincent de Paul Society is marking September across Australia by embarking on a journey of revitalisation, focusing on the power of community and the impact of its good works, rooted deeply in the principles of Catholic Social Teaching.

“The hands behind the help” is the theme for this year’s reflection and celebration. It is intended to highlight the diversity of the Society’s many activities, most depending on the dedication of conference members inspired by the tradition of its founders, led by Frédéric Ozanam in Paris in 1833.

In this tradition, the Society not only offers a hand-up to people in need but advocates strongly for ‘A Fairer Australia’.

Social justice issues such as the rights of First Nations people and asylum seekers and refugees, and a ban on the promotion of online gambling are among the key policies.

Members of the West Australian Society’s conferences, (local volunteers) respond to calls for assistance from people in need in their local community either through attendance at a Vinnies Support Centre or visiting people in their homes.

In Perth, the Society was established in 1865 and today it consists of more than 3,500 dedicated members and volunteers who assist more than 55,000 West Australians each year by providing a helping hand through food assistance, material aid, budget advice, advocacy, friendship and support.

This revitalisation month includes a heartfelt invitation for those not yet involved in the Society to consider how they might be able to put their faith in action and in a practical way show a profound commitment to the dignity of every human person and the call to solidarity.

Vincentians believe that every act of kindness, no matter how small, contributes to a larger wave of positive change.

Inspired by Catholic Social Teaching principles such as the common good and the preferential option for the poor, Vincentians focus on serving those in greatest need, ensuring they receive the respect, care and opportunities they deserve.

Whether it’s providing meals for those who are hungry, offering support and guidance to struggling families, or simply lending a listening ear, the goal is to be a source of comfort and strength. We are dedicated to showing up for those who need us, extending a helping hand to lift others up.

Throughout this month, we encourage Perth residents and Western Australians to consider ways they might celebrate the good works being instituted by Society members in local parishes.

From a family finding stability and hope after a period of hardship to individuals overcoming challenges with the support of our visits and referral pathways, the daily good works of Vincentians are a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

Whether you are a long-time supporter or someone new to this mission, there are many ways to get involved.

Together, we can live out our faith in practical ways, bringing light to those in darkness and hope to those in despair.
