A Notre Dame student’s work on the award-winning film Verge Collection has seen her named the top student film editor for 2024 at the Australian Screen Editors’ annual Ellie Awards.

Taylor Finch was recently awarded the Australian Film Television and Radio School Award for the Most Outstanding Student Editor for her editing on Verge Collection.

Verge Collection – a short film that explores the stories hiding behind items discarded to the verge – was created as part of the University’s Advanced Screen Production: Documentary course.

The film took out both the West Australian Short Film Prize and the People’s Choice Award at the Best Australian Short Film Competition earlier this year.

Taylor, who was behind both the sound and editing of Verge Collection, said the crew had a great time bringing the film to life.

“The skills and expertise that the teachers at Notre Dame have brought to our courses really made a big difference in how we were able to create that film,” she said.

“The course facilitated a great working environment and a fun set for us to be a part of, which allowed us to make a film we were really happy with and that went on to do some really cool things.”

Taylor will graduate with a Bachelor of Communications and Media next year and is currently completing an internship at a sound studio in Perth while working on another short film.

She said attending the Ellie Awards in Sydney was a great networking experience that gave her the opportunity to pick the brains of people who had once been in her shoes.

“I was just really looking forward to meeting more people and getting a better idea of how the industry works outside university, so I very caught off guard when I actually won,” she said.

“I found it really valuable to hear from people in the industry who have done so well, who once had to navigate what I am going to have to navigate over the next few years.”
