Scarborough Parish has last month celebrated its feast day with the launch of a new organ.

Parish Priest Fr Christian Irdi told The Record the new organ has been acquired from the Sydney Opera House – thanks to the fundraising efforts of parishioners.

Aquinas College Schola Cantorum (School Choir), directed by Hugh Lydon performed at the 9.30am Mass on 18 June, the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary to officially launch the new organ.

“Music is an important part of the liturgy for all – especially here at Scarborough Parish and we were all eager to do what we could to make it even better,” Fr Christian said.

“It has encouraged the parish to re-organise our music program, which is really helping parishioners to respond to the Word of God, not just within their role in the parish but in their lives as well,” he said.

The organ was originally used at Sydney Opera House for the performance of Gustav Holst’s the Planets, before being sold to Scarborough Parish.

The occasion was also followed by an international food fair for the parish at St John’s School.
