The Year 5 Class from Sacred Heart Primary School Mundaring have this term been playing their part in the ‘Socking It’ to Poverty Campaign.
Socktober is Catholic Mission’s fun school initiative aimed at raising awareness among school children of global poverty issues and raising money to help combat poverty in Australia and abroad.
The class held a number of activities and events around the Socktober theme, including a Crazy Sock Day when students and staff turned out to school wearing crazy, colourful socks – the more outrageous the better, and gave a gold coin donation for the privilege.
The class this month took their fundraising initiative out into the community and collected donations for Catholic Mission.
They also showcased some of their impressive project work around the need for clean water for children in Madagascar, and even gave puppet shows using the sock puppets they had made themselves.
All the donations raised through the Socktober initiative are very gratefully received by Catholic Mission, the Pope’s official mission aid agency in Australia which specifically targets the needs of children living in poverty in developing countries.
Francis Leong, Catholic Mission’s Director in Perth, commented that it is absolutely wonderful to see the students of Sacred Heart Primary in Mundaring living their faith.
“Showing such passionate concern for the children in our world who are not as fortunate as they are.
“I do hope that their Socktober activities will be an inspiration for students in other schools to do the same.”
