Home. What is it? And what ought it to be?

The topic of ‘Home’ will be examined by an up-coming conference featuring international and interstate speakers and organised by the Christopher Dawson Society for Philosophy and Culture.

The conference is the Dawson Society’s second major conference and will feature keynote speakers including Marc Barnes of Steubenville, Ohio (USA), Mrs Anna Krohn OAM from Victoria’s Thomas More Centre, and Emeritus Professor John Kinder OSI FAHA.

The theme of the conference, ‘HOME. Family. Place. Economics.’, was partially inspired by the role homes played during the COVID lockdowns of 2020 – 2022 and seeks to critically examine the notion of the home in contemporary society, culture, and economics.

The purpose of the conference is to inspire an ongoing conversation that begins with intellectual assessment but leads to practical and spiritual engagement in the homes and communities of participants.

The conference will feature wide-ranging papers on topics as varied as architecture and town planning, to the Australian hit tv-show Bluey, to the economics of the minimum wage and homelessness.

Co-founder and President of the Dawson Society, Dr Tom Gourlay is particularly excited about the diversity of those delivering papers and the perspectives and voices these presenters bring.

“One of the goals of the conference is to reach an audience of everyday people who are interested in engaging deeply in meaningful conversations about how we live as Catholics in today’s world.

This is an academic conference but for everyone, not just people who work in universities.”

An anticipated highlight of the conference will be the Thursday evening lecture which is free and open to the public. The lecture will formally open the conference in prayer led by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB.

Marc Barnes, editor of New Polity Magazine will present on the topic “Human weakness and its discontents: Why Modernity hates the home”.

This presentation promises a theologically rich examination of the Christian response to the vulnerability of human persons which is an integral component of the home and the family.

Hailing from Steubenville Ohio, Mr Barnes will also be offering an intriguing glimpse of some of the possibilities of Christian thought and social work including the recently established trade school of ‘St Joseph the Worker’.

The conference will be hosted at the Fremantle campus of the University of Notre Dame and will begin on Thursday evening 10 July with a free public lecture given by Marc Barnes USA, editor of New Polity Magazine.
