A conference held in anticipation of the new missal’s introduction, expected before the end of 2010, will take place in August featuring Fr Keith Pecklers SJ, Professor of Liturgy at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
"New Translations and Implementation/Catechesis on the New Missal," will be held at the Vietnamese Community Centre in Westminster on August 26 and will also take place on August 25 at a venue that is yet to be announced.
Fr Pecklers is a member of the Jesuit’s New York province and holds a licentiate and doctorate from the Pontifical Liturgical Institute where he is currently Professor of Liturgical History.
The conference is being convened by the Archdiocesan Centre for Liturgy and all diocesan priests have been advised of the event.
Fr Pecklers will also present  “Contemporary issues in Catholic Worship and Future Challenges” at Notre Dame University, Fremantle, on the evening of August 25.
According to promotional material, it promises "reflection on liturgical adaptation, inculturation and contextualisation;  the implications of the reform of liturgy and social justice, ecumenical liturgical cooperation and the challenge of liturgical translation, and questions around the ability of liturgy to adapt and speak to the postmodern world."
The International Commission on English in the Liturgy had been engaged to produce a new translation of liturgical texts in 2002. The new Order of the Mass it produced received recognition from the Holy See in June 2008 and has been released to bishops of the English speaking world for comment and local adaptation with the bishops of Australia voting to approve key liturgical texts in November last year.
More information on the conference can be obtained by calling the Centre for Liturgy on 9207 3350.
