The current housing crises and the impact on children is the main topic of a workshop as part of the End Child Poverty campaign.
The workshop is open to case workers and people who work day-to-day with children who experience homelessness in the Perth metropolitan area.
Young people who have experienced housing stress and homelessness are also welcome and are encouraged to attend with a support worker.
In partnership with the Equity Project and St Vincent de Paul Society WA, the Valuing Children Initiative is holding this lunchtime event as part of Homelessness Week 2024.
Why do we need this work?
The housing crisis is resulting in our children sleeping in cars, causing safety concerns; sleeping in beds with other children and adults putting them at higher risk of child sexual abuse and having to move away from their schools and friends causing a loss of connection to their community and wellbeing.
Research has shown that this uncertainty affects a child’s wellbeing and if not addressed can cause lifelong outcomes as they become adults.
What will we achieve from the workshop?
The work created by the group will be used as an advocacy piece for the End Child Poverty campaign – a national campaign calling on the Federal Government to introduce legislation to end child poverty in Australia.
The legislation is calling for an Act that would measure, report and ensure children are considered in Federal Government budgetary decision.
The workshop will take place on Thursday 8 August from 10am to 2.30pm.
