With 20-26 May being National Volunteer Week, Catholic Outreach was delighted to open its doors to Parish Pastoral Care Program Coordinators and Volunteers on Saturday, 25 May to celebrate and acknowledge them and the wonderful acts of kindness they perform for fellow parishioners and neighbours.

It was fitting that the morning started with a reflection in the chapel of St Therese Lisieux who reminds Christians that “nothing is small in the eyes of God. Do all that you do with love.”

The reflection focused on service and showing compassion, finishing with a prayer of blessing for the volunteers present and those they support.

Following the reflection, guests moved into the Seminar Room to enjoy morning tea in an atmosphere of conviviality where they met some 37 like-minded volunteers from various parishes.

“It was a delight to talk to such a wonderful group of people,” commented Anne, a Rosary Care Volunteer in Doubleview parish.

Catholic Outreach is a social service agency of the Archdiocese of Perth which provides services to assist parishes set up and support pastoral care programs which enable volunteers to provide practical short-term support for people in need in their local community.

“Whether a Care Program is engaged in a lot of Care Activities or just a few over the course of the year, each one is important because on the receiving end is a person dealing with a difficult situation,” observed Catholic Outreach Director, Marietta Russo.

“The help can only be offered in the first place because parishioners are willing to share their time and talents. We think it is important that we acknowledge this and recognise these caring volunteers who put their faith into action.

“Hosting this morning tea is the least we can do to say thank you. It was a morning of recognition and thanksgiving for the commitment, generosity and care demonstrated by Catholic Outreach volunteers.”

“It made me feel so appreciated for the humble role I play in my parish,” reflected Ruth, a Coordinator for Benedictcare in Applecross Parish.
