St John of God Murdoch Hospital’s Cancer Centre staff were the most recent and proud recipients of the winning entry for the hospital’s Christmas Decoration Competition.
The group embraced the spirit of Christmas with a coordinated dance and beautiful decorations in a performance that pleased and entertained patients who spent Christmas at the hospital.
Chair of the Competition, Director of Mission Colin Keogh, said competition was intense this year as many areas of the hospital put in a sterling effort.
“The Cancer Centre was chosen as the winner because it brought all the elements of the judging criteria to the fore, creating an uplifting message for patients, visitors and caregivers,” Mr Keogh said.
Staff and patients created recycled decorations together that embodied the values of the hospital; patients wrote wishes on hanging gift boxes and a horizontal tree was created to span the length of the unit.
To the delight of patients, staff also performed a choreographed Christmas dance every day for one week.
Nurse Manager of the Cancer Centre, Marie Condon, said Christmas can be a difficult time for many but the Centre decided to add some magic to make this Christmas extra special for their patient group.
“It is with great privilege that our team provide a high of standard of care to our patients and their folk – we consider them part of our extended family,” Ms Condon said.
“We decorated the department with their help and the lovely messages put on the boxes by patients really made our hearts swell.
“In the spirit of Christmas, we performed daily for our patients and their families and gave the team a serious lift in morale and fun,” she added.
