The Diocese of Broome has this week issued an urgent call to Perth Catholics to volunteer in various towns across the diocese.

The Diocese of Broome provides essential services to a number of Aboriginal communities, but due to COVID-19 border restrictions, interstate volunteers are unable to enter Western Australia.

In pre-COVID times, 70 per cent of volunteers working in the Diocese across the Kimberley have come from interstate.

At present, six volunteers are urgently needed in two different locations.

The Kimberley is Western Australia’s sparsely settled northern region.

It’s known for large swaths of wilderness defined by rugged ranges, dramatic gorges, semi-arid savanna and a largely isolated coastline.

Financial Administrator Tony Rogers said an experience of volunteering in the Kimberley will be one to remember.

“This is an opportunity to bear witness first-hand to the positive work of the Church in some of the most remote places in Australia, while also learning about our Australian-Aboriginal culture,” Mr Rogers said.

“It’s also a unique chance to consider your own growth and development from a different perspective,” he said.

Mr Rogers continued by explaining that the Church is eager to attract volunteers to ensure it continues its mission in the beautiful Kimberley region of Australia.

“Particularly for the sake of the people it has always served generously,” Mr Rogers said.

“You will form new friendships, while also learning new skills and sharing your existing skills in what are really very beautiful communities,” he said.

West Australian people of faith who are prepared to give their time immediately are invited to contact the Diocese of Broome Church via the details below.

Ideally volunteers are required to serve for a three-month period in return for travel, food and accommodation.

Applicants must be double vaccinated in order to qualify to serve in the Kimberley Mission.

“This is an awesome opportunity to serve in a meaningful and fulfilling way to support the Mission of Church within the Diocese of Broome,” Mr Rogers emphasised-.

“Please apply today, you will be welcomed and supported throughout your time in the Kimberley,” he concluded.
