Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB reminded staff and students that a Catholic school without God, will lose all its purpose, failing its students and its families.

This message was proclaimed during a Commissioning Mass that took place at Santa Maria College on 6 February and then Newman College on the 8 February.

Expressing his hopes that 2018 will be a year of growth, peace, and joy, Archbishop Costelloe encouraged students to take advantage of all the opportunities presented to them by the school, and use them to live a fulfilling life.

“One of the things that make Catholic schools unique is that we choose to celebrate the Eucharist together.”

“My prayer for all of you this year is that the glory of God, and the love which God pours out so freely and so fully on all of us, is experienced and shared,” he said.

In addressing the staff, students and parents who are new to the college, Archbishop Costelloe said that while some may approach new beginnings with mixed feelings, it is important for them to stay united with God.

“I want to encourage you all to begin the year with a sense of hope, with a sense of excitement, and with a strong sense of the presence of the Lord with you.”

He also informed those present at both events that there will be a meeting organised by Pope Francis in Rome this October to discern on what the Lord is calling the Church to do, and be for young people at this time in our history.

“The Pope wants to help the Church to accompany young people on their journey towards adulthood, so that through a process of reflection, you can discover your plan for life and realise it with joy.”

“This seems to me, a very accurate description of the role your school is meant to play in your life. But of course the school exists first and foremost to offer you the very best education possible,” he said.

Newman College gathered on 8 February with more than 3000 people, to launch their Ministry Plan and Vision for Learning Shine Through Discovery themed “Let Your Light Shine”.

The Ministry Plan was designed to provide the College Community with engaging framework aimed to encourage the students to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Upholding the core principles, Newman College’s Vision is to “Challenge, Collaborate, Create and Celebrate.”

Newman College Principal Mr John Finneran was delighted with the continuous support received from those present at the event, including Archbishop Costelloe who celebrated the Mass together with eight neighbouring Parish Priests.

Also present were representatives from various religious groups, namely from the Marist Brothers Community, Catholic Youth Ministry, Perth Youth Mission Team and Catholic Education of Western Australia.

Mr Finneran also revealed the College’s theme taken from Jeremiah 29:11, which says “For I know the plans I have for you…to give you hope and a future.”

Similarly, the community of all-girls Catholic school, Santa Maria College, celebrated their 80th anniversary on 6 February with an opening Mass celebrated by Archbishop Costelloe. The Mass was co-celebrated with Attadale Parish Priest Fr Sean Fernandez and attended by representatives from the Catholic Education WA, Mercy Education, and Sisters of Mercy, to which the College credits its’ heritage.
