The reality for many of us, at least some of the time, is that we are afraid and we are uncertain, writes Perth Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB in his 2021 Easter message published today, Thursday 25 March 2021.

“We can often feel as if God is not there or does not care,” Archbishop Costelloe highlighted.

The message, which is available via video and in print across The eRecord and Issue 30 of The Record Magazine which is being distributed in parishes this weekend, starts with the Archbishop talking about the words from the Gospel of John, verse 14.

“According to the gospel of John, Jesus spoke the following words to his disciples on the night before he died, ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God still and trust in me,’” Archbishop Costelloe says.

It is not always easy to follow this advice given to us by Jesus, he highlights.

“The challenges we face, not just because of the pandemic but because of the many other difficulties and problems that each of us faces in our personal, family and community lives, often overwhelm us.

However, Archbishop Costelloe reminds us, God is closer to us than we are to ourselves.

“The faith we seek and the peace which Jesus promises to give us are precious gifts, always on offer to us – but they are never forced upon us.”
