Acts 2 College of Mission and Evangelisation has this month held its first open day in its 11-year history, showcasing a variety of study options available at the College.
Principal Jane Borg explained that the College is a Catholic Registered Training Organisation (RTO) delivering accredited qualifications in Active Volunteering, Christian Leadership, Christian Ministry and Youth Ministry.
The College was established in 2005 with the view to providing Catholics – young and old – with formation in their faith and equipping them to work within the Church, wherever they believe God has called them.
“Over the years, the College has tailored its ministry training to meet the growing demand for youth ministry and now has graduates placed as qualified, paid youth ministers in schools, parishes and regional youth groups,” Mrs Borg said.
“Despite the youth focus, its courses are available to people of all ages, with graduates ranging in age from 17 to 62,” she said.
Mrs Borg went on to say that, in 2015, the College has branched out into electronic training to enable those who can’t attend classes in person to benefit from the training offered in the College.
Mrs Borg explained that the Open Day gave her the opportunity to demonstrate each of the courses offered by the College in person, including Certificates I and II in Active Volunteering, Certificate III in Christian Leadership and Ministry, Certificate IV in Christian Ministry, and the Diploma of Youth Ministry, noting that all courses are available as either online study, part time or full time.
“The Certificate IV in Christian Ministry, which has been the backbone of the College, is still offered in the classroom, and can be undertaken as a full-time or part-time study option,” she said.
“Both the Certificate II and Certificate III are accredited with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) and are on offer to secondary colleges for online study by their students.”
In 2012, the College also established a Middle School Ministry retreat team to offer curriculum-based retreat programs for sacramental preparation in upper primary school and retreats for Years 7 to 8 in secondary colleges.
“This year, the retreat team will have completed some 50 days of retreat and the service continues to be in demand by a growing number of schools.
“This team, along with other ministry opportunities, enables the student to get on-the-ground experience in youth ministry, which is core to the youth ministry training.
“The College produces fully trained youth ministers who are competent to work in the industry in various roles, depending on the level and focus of training undertaken,” Mrs Borg said.
Mrs Borg also took the opportunity of the Open Day to launch the College’s new logo, which was developed to take the College into future years.
“It maintains the deep red, the traditional colour representing the Holy Spirit, and brings in the Bible, the cross, and the Holy Spirit, each of which is integral to the transformational experience of studying through Acts 2 College,” Mrs Borg said.
