For many Australians, a visit to Italy is not complete without seeing Rome’s St Peter’s Basilica up close, to admire the architectural and artistic masterwork that went into its design during the Renaissance period.
But a plane ticket may not be necessary just yet, as an upcoming documentary will take viewers through St Peter’s as well as three other Roman Basilicas – St John in the Lateran, St Mary Major and St Pauls Outside the Walls.
Presented by the creators of Florence and the Uffizi Gallery 3D, this film – St Peter’s and the Papal Basilicas of Rome 3D, will arrive in Perth cinemas on 18 June, with exclusive screenings also available.
The film leads audiences through the Basilicas, detailing the design and structures within each, including precious papal altars, and artworks by Michelangelo, Bramante, Giotto, Francesco Borromini, Bernini, Domenico Fontana, Arnolfo di Cambio and Jacopo Torriti.
Along with detailed 3D footage, audiences are also provided with commentary from world-renowned experts, discussing the evolution of each Basilica, including the artworks within and the artists behind them, and profiles of the Popes who worked and celebrated mass there.
In doing so, the film gives an important insight into the role of art within Christian tradition, and reveals the profound spirituality that is present in each of these majestic buildings.
Given the current Jubilee Year of Mercy, this consideration is particularly profound.
In WA, St Peter’s and the Papal Basilicas of Rome 3D will be screened at Cinema Paradiso in Northbridge and Readings Cinema in Mandurah, with tickets on sale now.
It is rated E (suitable for everyone), and runs for 90 minutes.
Special exclusive screenings will be held on Saturday June 18 and Sunday June 19 at 1 pm at Cinema Paradiso.
