Students and staff from Mater Dei College Edgewater have last week, Friday 21 September, gathered to present a cheque of more than $4000 to LifeLink, as part of their charitable efforts to help people in need.

The money was raised through a Lap-a-thon event and Year 9 mission project and was held in conjunction with the Archbishop’s 2018 LifeLink Day initiative and Wellbeing week on Thursday 16 August.

The students and staff completed the Lap-a-thon dressed in their favourite quirky socks.

Several representatives from Wheelchairs for kids – an organisation made up of retired volunteers, who manufacture and distribute wheelchairs to disabled children, were present for the event.

Perth Auxiliary Bishop and Chairman of LifeLink, Donald Sproxton, gratefully accepted the funds, commending the students and staff for their generosity, dedication, time and efforts in making a positive impact in the community.

“Since LifeLink began its work of fundraising for the 13 Archdiocesan social services agencies that we support, this College has raised $45,000, which is extraordinary.

“There are many different ways that we work together as a Church in order to do good things for people.

“Some are more direct, such as the way in which you support the wheelchair project and you can see in a very clear way the results of your contribution,” Bishop Sproxton added.

“The work that we do has probably touched more than 200,000 people in the period of time since LifeLink began, and for that, I am very grateful.

“I hope that you will continue to support the work of those in our community, who are really struggling and really need the support of people like you, like me, to help make a difference in their lives, so thank you very much.”

Principal of Mater Dei College Annette Morey echoed Bishop Sproxton’s sentiments, adding

“The work of LifeLink is really important, on behalf of the students, staff and parents, thank you for taking time out of your day. Today is about celebrating how much we have done here at Mater Dei,” she said.
