Approximately 1500 kilometres off the Australian coast, 2600 kilometres northwest of Perth, in the middle of the Indian Ocean, lies the unique community of Christmas Island, home to some 1700 residents.
Equally unique – and inspiring – is the island’s Catholic faith community that, although not within the jurisdiction of the Catholic Archdiocese of Perth, falls under its pastoral care.
One recent example of the faith community in action was the 2025 Christmas Mass which fostered unity, celebration and shared joy.
A congregation of 22 residents attended the Mass that was celebrated by Fr Albert Anthonysamy OSM.
At the heart of the celebration was inclusivity, with the Mass welcoming Catholics, other Christian denominations, and even members of the Buddhist community.
Those in attendance said the atmosphere was warm and meaningful, with all participants actively and enthusiastically engaging in the liturgy.
Following the Mass, a communal meal was shared, hosted by the family of long-standing residents Ron and Susan De Cruz, who also care for the church and its garden.
The gathering provided an opportunity for fellowship, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and spiritual renewal as attendees embraced the true meaning of Christmas.
As Fr Anthonysamy reflected, “Christmas on Christmas Island is more than a celebration – it is a reminder that faith and fellowship can unite people across traditions and cultures.”
Beyond major feasts like Christmas and Easter, the community regularly facilitates other gatherings that seek to foster togetherness and devotion among Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
