Bishop Nelson Po’s Coat of Arms and Motto contain rich religious and personal symbolism that uniquely reflects both his life and vocational journeys.
THE GALERO
A green, low-crowned, wide-brimmed hat with cords and 12 green tassels (six on each side) indicates the rank of a Bishop.
FILIPINO HERITAGE
The Coconut tree, with three five-pointed stars, represents the three main island groups in the Philippines (Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao).
THE CHI RHO – CHRIST AT THE CENTRE
The Chi Rho is one of the earliest Christian symbols, formed by the first two Greek letters – Chi (x) and Rho (p) of the word Christos. Resembling a cross with a hooked top, it signifies Christ and his resurrection. The risen Christ, the centre and foundation, connects and draws into unity each dimension of life.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
The black swan, with the light of the Southern Cross, represents the State of Western Australia and the Particular Church of the Archdiocese of Perth.
THE PROCESSIONAL CROSS
Located behind the shield, with a single-bar cross, signifies the rank of the Bishop.
THE ESCUTCHEON
Divided into two parts: the left side represents the diocese which the Bishop serves in, and the right side represents his personal coat of arms.
PATRON SAINT
The white lilies are a symbol of St Joseph. St Joseph is the much-loved Patron Saint of Bishop Po.
SYNODALITY
The Holy Spirit, represented by the flame, guides the Church’s synodal path towards deeper communion, participation, and mission.
