The Welcome Mass, held on Sunday 15 February, marked the start of Orientation Week and formally welcomed new residents and their families into the St Thomas More College community.

As a Catholic residential college, the Mass also marked the beginning of the academic year, giving everyone a moment to pause, come together, and begin the year with reflection and purpose.

With staff, residents, and families all in attendance, the Mass created a warm and welcoming atmosphere on what can be a busy and sometimes overwhelming first day for new students.

For many families, it was an opportunity to experience the Catholic faith and values that underpin the College in action, and to experience firsthand the sense of connection and belonging that Tommy More is known for.

The Mass encouraged all residents, both new and returning, to appreciate the sense of community and support that guided them in their university journey, as they welcomed new residents to the College.

A blessing was also shared to mark the beginning of the new academic year, offering support and good wishes for what’s to come.

The Choir of the Holy Spirit added something really special to the celebration, singing beautifully throughout the Mass. The choir’s contribution was greatly appreciated by all in attendance and added to the sense of occasion and welcome.

Reflecting on the event, Head of College Mim Jones said, “Beginning the academic year in prayer allows us to centre our community in faith and gratitude. It is a meaningful reminder that each student is supported not only academically, but also spiritually and personally, as they journey through their time at College.”

St Thomas More College Chapel also holds regular Community Masses, which are open to all. These take place every Thursday at 12:00 noon and every Sunday at 5:30 pm, providing ongoing opportunities for residents, staff, and families to come together in faith and community.

The 2026 Welcome Mass was a meaningful and fitting way to begin Orientation Week. It reminded everyone that Tommy is more than just a place to live and study; it is a supportive community built on faith, connection, and shared values.
