Catholic Youth Ministry have recently brought a stirring, faith-filled production to life in The Witness—a contemporary retelling of the Gospel story through the eyes of Peter the Apostle.
Held after months of preparation and passion on Saturday 28 June and Sunday 29 June, the musical production was more than just a performance; it was a powerful encounter with the story of Christ, according to CYM Director Adam Phillips.
“Brought to life by a cast and crew of young adults deeply committed to both their craft and their faith,” Mr Phillips said.
Originally written by Jimmy and Carol Owens, The Witness is a globally staged musical, cherished for its timeless message of redemption, discipleship, and transformation.
The local production, explained Mr Phillips, offered a fresh take—rich with energy, relevance, and heart—resonating with audiences both young and old.
At the centre of the story is Peter, portrayed with depth and humanity by Edmond Whyte. His journey of doubt, denial, and eventual devotion gave the audience a moving lens through which to experience the life and ministry of Jesus.
Alongside him, Ellen Van Beek offered a touching portrayal of Mary, while Devontre Noel brought a gentle strength to the role of Christ.
“Each actor, from seasoned performers to first-time musical participants, brought something uniquely heartfelt to the production,” Mr Phillips highlighted.
Also, Directed by Chloe Presley and co-produced with Carole Constance, the musical was a true collaboration with all involved to bring this musical to life.
Under the musical direction of Karen Gonsalves and choreography by Janelle Leach, each number—from the reflective “I Love You Lord” to the triumphant “The Victor”—was delivered with emotional weight and joyful enthusiasm, Mr Phillips continued.
Beyond the performances, The Witness is part of CYM’s broader mission: to create transformative experiences for youth that combine the arts with faith formation.
“Working with the youth on this project has been inspiring, energising and uplifting,” Mr Phillips reinforced.
“We hope that everyone who experienced the show encountered the transformative power of musical theatre and the love of God.”
Supported generously by the Knights of the Southern Cross, along with sponsors Move Homes, C.A.T.E.R., and With Hart Productions, the show was a true testament to what community, creativity, and the Holy Spirit can achieve when they come together.
For many involved, the experience was more than just a performance. It was a journey of discipleship, belonging, and using their God-given talents to serve others. As the final song faded and the cast bowed to thunderous applause, it was clear: The Witness wasn’t just a show—it was a ministry.
