“Men aged 18+ years seeking an insight into seminary life and formation for the priesthood are invited to attend this ‘Come & See’ Open Day at St Charles Seminary on Sunday 18 May 2025,” said Fr Joseph Laundy, Vice Rector of the Seminary and Director of the Archdiocese of Perth’s Vocations Office.

- Brunch (provided) and Q&A with priests and seminarians (11am – 1pm)

Following the Call
Have you ever felt a persistent thought that you might be called to something greater? Fr Joseph Laundy understands that feeling well.
“I did. As a child, I dreamt of being the guy who invented cool stuff, and that led me to become a medical researcher. But as my career in medical science took off, I felt an unexpected pull towards the priesthood.”
Many seminarians have unique paths. Christopher de Freitas, a fifth-year seminarian, once planned for marriage.
“As I prepared for my future, I felt called in a different direction. While praying the rosary, a passage from the Gospel of John struck me: ‘He who loses his life for my sake will find it.’ That moment inspired me to follow my calling.”
For Thomas Lai, a fourth-year seminarian, the call came after a time of doubt. “I lost my faith for a while. But when I returned to the Church, I kept asking myself, What should I do with my life? One day, I heard a Gospel reading where Jesus proclaimed the Good News, and I thought—maybe that’s what God is calling me to do.”

“Answering God’s call isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it,” says Fr Joseph. “When something keeps tugging at your heart, don’t ignore it. It might just be the start of an incredible journey.”
