The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference have this week congratulated the Honourable Keith Pitt on his appointment as the new Australian Ambassador to the Holy See.
The prestigious role is a testament to Mr Pitt’s distinguished service and dedication to our nation.
Having served as Member for Hinkler, Queensland from the Liberal National Party since 2013, Mr Pitt has been Minister for Resources and Water since 2021 to 2022, Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister in 2019 and Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment from 2016 to 2017.
Mr Pitt is married with three children and is a qualified Electrical Engineer.
Transitioning from his role in Federal Parliament to this significant diplomatic position, said the Australian Catholic Bishops, underscores the trust and confidence placed in him to represent Australia’s interests on the global stage.
“His experience and insights will undoubtedly serve him well as he navigates the complexities of international diplomacy,” the Bishops said.
The appointment of a former parliamentarian to this esteemed position follows a notable precedent.
In 2008, former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd appointed the Hon Tim Fischer AC as the first resident ambassador to the Vatican, highlighting the importance of this role in fostering international relations.
Outgoing Ambassador Chiara Porro was last appointed in 2020.
“We assure Mr Pitt of our support and prayers as he seeks to be a bridge of goodwill between the Australian government and the Holy See,” the Australian Bishops said.
“We also extend our sincere thanks to outgoing ambassador Chiara Porro for her dedicated service over four years and wish her and her family well for all that lies ahead,” they said.
