A groundbreaking event, “End Child Poverty: In Conversation with Professor Sharon Bessell,” is coming to Perth on Friday, November 22.

Hosted at Lawson’s Flat, this special evening will gather passionate advocates, parents, and young people, along with community leaders, to spotlight the pressing issue of child poverty in Australia.

The unique opportunity, running from 6pm to 8pm, offers attendees the chance to hear directly from Professor Sharon Bessell, whose work in child poverty research has provided critical insights into the experiences of children affected by poverty.

Professor Bessell’s research not only amplifies the voices of children but also creates essential metrics for understanding and addressing child poverty, setting a course toward ending it.

What to Expect
Attendees will learn about the latest research developments, hear powerful stories, and see impactful visuals, including the “Teddy Bear Installation,” a poignant display of 100 teddy bears—each representing a child. Seventeen of these bears will be set apart in different colors to signify the 17 per cent of children in Australia currently living in poverty.

Key event highlights include:

  • Speaker Insight: Professor Sharon Bessell will share her findings from the “More for Children” research, exploring the personal and systemic barriers children face and how policies can make a difference.
  • Campaign Goals: Attendees will gain an inside look at the progress of the End Child Poverty campaign, upcoming goals for 2025, and ways to support impactful change as Australia approaches key elections.
  • Interactive Installations: The Teddy Bear Installation offers a moving illustration of the lives impacted by poverty and serves as a visual reminder of the urgent need for change.

The event will be complemented by a welcome drink and canapés, sponsored by The Tony Fini Foundation, adding a warm atmosphere to an evening focused on fostering community engagement and understanding.

The MOR Framework: A New Approach to Child-Centered Policy
Professor Bessell’s “MOR Framework” provides an innovative perspective on child poverty, focusing not only on income but on the full spectrum of challenges poverty presents to children. From educational opportunities to community participation, the framework reveals how poverty impacts children’s day-to-day lives and calls for policies that are centered on children’s needs and aspirations.
