In the introduction to his book Living Biblically (2008), Perth Emeritus Archbishop Barry Hickey stated that he chose the title of his book in light of a longing to go back to the scriptural beginnings of Christianity and “understand anew the meaning of our Baptism and Confirmation and the forgotten dimensions of faith.”

To live according to the Bible, he adds, is to be aware that “we are living in an age of the Risen Lord, the age of the Holy Spirit.”

With these words of encouragement, the Centre for Faith Enrichment (CFE) is again calling for applications to the Scripture studies scholarship set up by the Emeritus Archbishop.

The scholarship offers lay people an opportunity to undertake Biblical studies as a response to their baptismal calling, and to help others with that knowledge. The scholarships are for Biblical studies of any length at any level, locally, interstate, or overseas.

Applicants need not be academics or have an academic background and are invited to propose a Biblical study project that suits their own interests and capabilities.

CFE Director Dr Marco Ceccarelli reiterated the importance of studying Scripture in our times.

“The scholarship continues to give many lay people life-changing opportunities to delve into the richness of the Bible,” Dr Ceccarelli said.

“We’ve seen people travel interstate to attend courses or conferences, others have flown overseas and have returned with inspiring stories, this really is an opportunity to travel, study Scripture and enrich one’s faith,” he added.
