Jesus Youth community in Perth is inviting Year 12 and university students to join its five-day faith formation camp commencing the summer holidays from 26 to 30 November at Vincentian Retreat Centre in Karrakup.

Titled “Trendsetter”, the camp is themed around the words of Pope Benedict XVI: “You are made for greatness” and aimed to “equip young people to stand for Jesus, especially while on campus”.

A representative of Jesus Youth Australia in Perth Deepak Kuriacose said it is essential for young people to attend as the camp will help them realise their “greatest potential” in communicating God’s message.

“Two places could be considered ‘their space’ that offer the greatest potential for communication for young people, one is social media, and the other is their places of study,” Mr Kuriacose said.

“The program objective is a particular focus on evangelisation of young people studying in campuses, helping them to live in holiness, rooted in the word of God, sacraments, regular networking and fellowship and reaching out others or communicate the message of hope in their campus circle with their witnessing lifestyle.”

George Devassy, former international coordinator of Jesus Youth Lay Missionary Movement, has been appointed as the main speaker.

The camp will cover topics such as the difference between worldly love and God’s love, sin, repentance, inner healing, the theology of the body, as well as mission and evangelisation.

It is expected to have some 25 students aged 18 to 25 join the camp.

A camp is an annual event of Jesus Youth Australia. However, the upcoming camp will be the first one held in Perth.

“Last year was in Brisbane, around 30 young people attended nationally from different cities in Australia,” Mr Kuriacose said.

“Another ‘Trendsetters’ faith formation camp will be held in Canberra from 28 January to 2 February 2019.”

Currently, there are about 20 active members of Jesus Youth Australia in Perth.

“We meet regularly on every Thursday evening at St Jude Catholic Church, Langford Parish,” Mr Kuriacose added.

Jesus Youth is an international association within the Catholic Church with a focus on evangelising young people and nurturing their missionary initiatives and is currently active in more than 30 countries.

The organisation is an initiative of young people, who are reaching out to other young people “with the help of the Holy Spirit”.
