Last night 19 July saw the official inauguration of new Principal of St Norbert College, Simon Harvey, a former student of the college.

Mr Harvey became the eighth principal in the school’s 52-year history and the first alumnus to ever hold the position, after replacing Annette Morey who has been appointed principal of Mater Dei College in Edgewater.

The St Norbert College school community challenged Mr Harvey to lead the College with justice, integrity and truth, along with mirroring the school values of community, respect, heritage, friendship, adaptability and commitment.

Prior of St Norbert College, Fr Peter Stiglich O Praem, conferred a special blessing upon Mr Harvey and said he was thrilled to have Mr Harvey on board.

“Simon brings an enthusiasm for teaching and learning; and an expertise in pastoral care,” he said.

“He understands that in Catholic schooling, the education of the whole person, as created in God’s image, is truly important.”

Mr Harvey expressed his excitement of returning to St Norbert College in a leadership capacity.

“The school community is built on the wonderful contributions of past and present staff, students, families and the Norbertines, and I hope I can add positively to this,” he said.

Mr Harvey said his philosophy on education revolved around the idea of education being more than just an academic experience for students.

“Education must focus on what is in the best interests of all students and their development as whole persons.

“Schools must continuously look to broaden the experiences of our students to equip them with the skills to make positive contributions in our society and to strive to be the best they can be,” he said.

After graduating from St Norbert College in 1988, Mr Harvey has taught at numerous Catholic schools in WA, including Emmanuel Catholic College and had an eight-year stint at St Norbert College from 1999 to 2007.

His other appointments throughout his career in education included Trinity College as Deputy Principal, as well as filling the role of Vice Principal at Chisholm Catholic College.

Departing Principal Mrs Morey, farewelled the St Norbert College community late last month at a school assembly and said she has had many fond memories after five years in the position.

She added that the ‘overwhelming sense of community’ at the school had a big impact on her.

“Many families comment at enrolment interviews that the College ‘feels different’ to other schools,” she said.

“It is something to celebrate and nurture moving forward.

“I have been enriched personally and professionally from the generosity of the St Norbert College community.”

Mrs Morey this month commences her new role as principal of Mater Dei College in Edgewater.
