Trinity College in East Perth celebrated the completion of its new Sports Centre on 15 November 2016, with an official opening ceremony and a blessing by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe.
Executive Director of Edmund Rice Education Australia, Dr Wayne Tinsey, was present at the event, along with esteemed guests such as the Lord Mayor of Perth, Lisa Scaffidi, and the Chairman of the Trinity College Board, Mr John Driscoll.
As one of the four pillars that make up the Trinity College ethos, sport is held in high regard at the College. This added even more meaning to the much anticipated event as teachers and students watched the unveiling of the building while dwelling on its enormous potential.
Designed by architectural firm Parry & Rosenthal, the planning and construction of Sports Centre has been three years in the making, and the building opened just in time to celebrate the graduation of the 2016 Year 12 students.
With the completion of the new Sports Centre also came the presentation of the Trinity College Sporting Honour Boards. The honour boards cover 19 sports, with some of them dating back as early as the 1890’s.
With the opening now completed, work has officially begun on the Public Art aspect of the building. The College is working with the art firm VJzoo to create an exciting video art display to project on the exterior of the Sports Centre. The video art will be composed of footage from actual Trinity sporting events, edited and digitally manipulated to create a semi-abstracted, painterly effect that will be mesmerising and calming for the viewer. This artwork will only be visible at night, and will be seen from some distance, thus acting as a literal beacon for the school.
Students and sports teams have already begun using the facility, and the College is looking forward to transitioning all sports and assemblies to the centre in 2017.
