A two-day walking pilgrimage from Northampton to Geraldton, Western Australia, will take place in early May, reflecting on the spirituality of Catholic priest and architect Monsignor John Hawes (1876–1965).
Director of Heritage for the Diocese of Geraldton, Father Robert Cross said the pilgrimage would focus around the built heritage of Mgr Hawes, whose Franciscan spirituality visibly imbues his buildings.
The path of the pilgrimage, dubbed Camino San Francisco – or Walk of St Francis – will appeal to pilgrims seeking a spiritual boost.
Beginning at the Hawes-designed Sacred Heart Convent in Northampton and trailing 30km through the countryside, walkers will stay overnight at Our Lady of Fatima in Nanson, before continuing another 30km (the next day) via Nazareth House and St Lawrence’s Church in Bluff Point and then concluding at the Cathedral of St Francis Xavier in Geraldton.
“Lovers of history and people who enjoy a walk in the countryside will also appreciate this reflective and spiritual opportunity,” Fr Cross said.
“The Camino will provide a clear insight into the work and spirituality that Mgr Hawes put into his buildings, while also taking in the fresh air and stunning scenery of the Chapman Valley.”
Monsignor Hawes Heritage board member Julia Weir is assisting Fr Cross with planning the pilgrimage.
She said the Camino would add value to the heritage experience of the late priest’s architectural accomplishments.
“We want to create an awe-inspiring experience,” she said.
“The story of Mgr Hawes is so compelling, it’s of interest to everyone because it has world-class heritage significance,” Ms Weir said.
Participants will pay a fee of $220 to cover expenses for the one-off guided walking tour, which will take place from 1-3 May.
Fr Cross is seeking a guitarist or flautist to provide reflective music.
